Are there any little things that you do that provide you with a disproportionate amount of pleasure?

For example, I have spent a lot of time in the library at my workplace, preparing for exams. The doors just outside the library are marked "PUSH" on one side and "PULL" on the other, but the door hinges actually swing both ways. Ever since I realised this, I have always pulled from the PUSH side and pushed from the PULL side.

It makes me happy smile

I get up before work and spend my morning exactly the same way each day I have to go to work. I get up an hour earlier than I really have to so I can sit and have a cup of tea and read.

There's an intersection near my house where people frequently go far past the stop line, with their cars ending up part way in the pedestrian walkway. I take great pleasure in giving such drivers a nasty look the entire time I cross (making eye contact whenever possible) as well as walking straight up to their car, intentionally swerving and going as closely around the front as I can, and then returning to the path they had blocked right afterwards. So petty, so immature, but so very satisfying!

I'm doing a jigsaw puzzle. I formed most of the edge pieces, but I didn't finish doing that before I started doing the insides. This violates some rule I have (was taught?) about always doing the edge first.

Yes, things like that all the time, especially things that other people don't expect.

Imagine using the doors that way when a nearby person didn't expect it. That would be fun.

In the bathroom at work, someone brings in their own hand soap, but it's enough to share. Whoever it is always replenishes the empty bottles. Over a 2-3 week period recently, the person must have been sick or on vacation, because the bottles become nearly empty, and one laid on its side for an entire day. I began balancing the bottles upside down. Sometimes, days would pass before they were upturned again. Some days, the bottles were reversed every time I want back in. I don't know if I was fighting one person or many, but then one day the bottles were replaced with full ones and the fun ended.

I do little things like that pretty constantly. I'm always finding some sort of stupid and harmless shenanigans to stealthily get up to. I like playing games with or trolling people who have no idea its me on the other end (and I don't know who they are either).

Your survey reminds me of the Norman door video:

That's a really interesting video! Thanks.

So, I see your fascinating and intelligent video about the psychology of design, and in return ask, Do you think these pilots gained a disproportionate amount of pleasure from doing this?

My boss just finished reading the book by Don Norman, The Design of Everyday Things, and offered to let me borrow it. I am just going to buy it instead. I'm rough with books, and I love the chance of finding someone's notes in the margins of a used one.

I don't think it was disproportionate at all! grin grin It's a shame that while everyone on the ground enjoyed the show, it is being taken so seriously by officials.

I really enjoy puncturing the foil of a fresh jar of instant coffee with my finger, and then just pouring it in the cup straight from the jar, even though it means the floor below me tends to be constantly stained by instant coffee granules, but I like the ritual.

Remote control of almost anything. A lot of small airports have "pilot controlled lighting"; you click 3, 5, or 7 times on the radio and the runway lights come on low, medium, or bright. Even just pushing the button for the garage door makes me smile.
